1. Management oversight a. Follows direction set by Chief Executive Officer and Board of Directors. b. May participate in developing policy and strategic plans. c. Appropriately represent the company at the Board of Directors level d. The COO is expected to act in the absence of the Chief Executive Officer. The COO exercises management responsibility over the company ensuring efficient services that are designed to meet the needs of customers, employees and the public. This will either be done directly, or through delegation of responsibility to the staff. e. Develop new business strategies to enhance market share and improve overall performance f. Work through the management team and leadership of the company, serving as a resource to help reduce costs, enhance revenues, achieve effective utilization and quality goals and objectives, analyze and utilize information to develop and support management decisions. g. Communicate key information to the stakeholders of the company with respect to marketplace needs, the competitive environment, cost management, and customer-focused services. h. The role requires significant leadership skill and ability. The COO is accountable for the overall success of operations. He/she leads and oversees the development of division operating and strategic plans.
2. Management of operations a. The Chief Operating Officer is responsible for the smooth and efficient operation of the company, including management of the profit and loss statement for the business, as well as the related resources associated with the operation. b. Manages organization operations by directing and coordinating activities consistent with established goals, objectives, and policies. c. In this capacity, the COO carries responsibility for integrating the strategic plan of the organization with the operations. The COO provides management oversight for the development of high quality, cost effective and integrated programs within the company. d. Provides direction and structure for operating units e. Oversee major workforce and resource decisions for the company f. Attention is given to systems, program development, quality, fiscal management, compliance and management measures, relationships, outreach strategies, work culture enhancement and internal communication and consensus-building. He ensures that disparate resources are focused enterprise-wide on optimally satisfying the needs of those the company serves.
3. Inter-department duties a. Develop and foster effective collaboration between departments, divisions, and leadership
4. External duties a. Function as an effective liaison and intermediary between the company and customers. b. Where appropriate, represent the company to the external market, as well as for community relations and marketing activities.
